Bridged Links and Tangle Presentations of Cobordism Categories

چکیده

We develop a calculus of surgery data, called bridged links, which involves besides links also pairs of balls that describe one-handle attachements. As opposed to the usual link calculi of Kirby and others this description uses only elementary, local moves(namely modifications and isolated cancellations ), and it is valid also on non-simply connected and disconnected manifolds. In particular, it allows us to give a presentation of a 3manifold by doing surgery on any other 3-manifold with the same boundary. Bridged link presentations on unions of handlebodies are used to give a Cerf-theoretical derivation of presentations of 2+1-dimensional cobordisms categories in terms of planar ribbon tangles and their composition rules. As an application we give a different, more natural proof of the Matveev-Polyak presentations of the mapping class group, and, furthermore, find systematically surgery presentations of general mapping tori. We discuss a natural extension of the Reshetikhin Turaev invariant to the calculus of bridged links. Invariance follows now similar as for knot invariants from simple identifications of the elementary moves with elementary categorial relations for invariances or cointegrals, respectively. Hence, we avoid the lengthy computations and the unnatural Fenn-Rourke reduction of the original proofs. Moreover, we are able to start from a much weaker “modularity”-condition, which implies the one of Turaev. Generalizations of the presentation to cobordisms of surfaces with boundaries are outlined.

An invariant of tangle cobordisms

In [9] to a plane diagram D of an oriented tangle T with 2n bottom and 2m top endpoints we associated a complex F(D) of (H, H)-bimodules, for certain rings H. We proved that the isomorphism class of this complex in the homotopy category is an invariant of T. In this paper we give a short argument that our construction yields an invariant of tangle cobordisms. To a diagram of an oriented cobordi...

Singular Cobordism Categories

Recently Galatius, Madsen, Tillmann and Weiss identified the homotopy type of the classifying space of the cobordism category of embedded d-dimensional manifolds [7] for each positive integer d. Their result lead to a new proof of the generalized standard Mumford conjecture. We extend the main theorem of [7] to the case of cobordism categories of embedded d-dimensional manifolds with prescribed...

Geometric cobordism categories

In this paper we study cobordism categories consisting of manifolds which are endowed with geometric structure. Examples of such geometric structures include symplectic structures, flat connections on principal bundles, and complex structures along with a holomorphic map to a target complex manifold. A general notion of “geometric structure” is defined using sheaf theoretic constructions. Our m...

Chiral Structures on the 4d Spin Cobordism Category

We use the isomorphism Spin(4) = Spin(3) × Spin(3) to propose a quantization the four-dimensional spin cobordism category away from the prime two, as a Weyl algebra of endomorphisms of the three-dimensional spin cobordism category. 1. The 4D spin cobordism category . . . The classifying spectrum of the (symmetric monoidal) cobordism category with compact oriented d-manifolds as objects, and D =...

h-cobordism and s-cobordism Theorems: Transfer over Semialgebraic and Nash Categories, Uniform bound and Effectiveness

The h-cobordism theorem is a noted theorem in differential and PL topology. A generalization of the h-cobordism theorem for possibly non simply connected manifolds is the so called s-cobordism theorem. In this paper, we prove semialgebraic and Nash versions of these theorems. That is, starting with semialgebraic or Nash cobordism data, we get a semialgebraic homeomorphism (respectively a Nash d...
